Eldimagi: Mask of Ukambaritu
.
Description
During the godswar few gods were as fearsome as Ukambaritu, the shadow dragon. The dragon was an ephemeral being of dream and shadow, constantly shifting it’s form into a horrible visage to terrify all who beheld it.
Ukambaritu’s favorite game was terrifying mortals to the point where their heart stopped. It wielded illusion with devestating effect, and became the most widely feared (and capricious) elder god.
Ukambaritu’s favorite prey was the children of the Earthmother, because the vithee were the purest and most innocent of mortals. He would spend months or even years crafting horrifying illusions that eventually drove the vithee to madness or suicide.
The Shadow Dragon also struck the first blow of the godswar. The summit of gods to decide the fate of the world was deadlocked. Many wished to unmake the Great Cycle and start over, but a few dissented. The Earthmother was one of them. Ukambaritu knew that the Earthmother would never consent to having her children slaughtered and the world unmade. So rather than continue the discussion it simply attacked.
The Earthmother didn’t fight back, but neither would she let herself be killed. She fled across the world, defending against each of the Shadow Dragon’s attacks. Ukambaritu finally caught her on what is now the island of Teophilus. He broke through her defenses and ripped out her heart, feasting upon her terror and despair for days.
This act of brutality brought many neutral gods to the side of those who wished to preserve the Great Cycle. They descended on the Shadow Dragon en masse, ripping Ukambaritu apart and leaving his broken corpse not far from the site of the Earthmother’s.
It wasn’t long before untyped trolls found the remains of the Shadow Dragon. They were warped and twisted in his image, becoming shadowy lizardmen. These lizardmen formed a feral, brutal society that killed or enslaved all they encountered.
This put them at natural odds with the elfen who eventually settled around the body of the Earthmother. They warred constantly, until the elfen finally pushed the lizardmen past the Gateway of Shadows.
The Gateway is the edge of the jungle around the body of Ukambaritu. It is a line where the Shadow Dragon’s power corrupts and shapes the jungle into twisted nightmares. The elfen don’t dare enter, but the lizardmen don’t often leave either.
The exception is Ukar, death on night’s wings. Thousands of years ago he was one of the first trolls to make his way to the catalyst. Through a mixture of cunning and ruthlessness he outlived every other troll, growing more powerful with each passing year.
Eventually he evolved into something very similar to Ukambaritu himself, a great dragon with powerful illusion magic. Nor was that the only similarity. Ukar possesses the same malicious cruelty as his god, inflicting terror on much of the island’s population.
The elfen avoid the dragon at all costs, falling back wherever it is seen. They will not enter the territory surrounding the Gateway unless there is dire need. Ukar know’s this, so he is forced to hunt them on their own lands.
The dragon uses his illusion magic to cause conflict between the tribes, and takes great pride in getting elfen to kill elfen. He is currently attempting to foster all out war between the tribes, and may succeed if not stopped.
