Creating Major Locations

Every adventure includes at least a few Major Locations, while larger adventures can include a dozen or more.  Creating these locations requires a substantial amount of work, but the rewards are well worth the investment.  Below you will find the Major Location Template, which guides you through creating such locations for your adventure.

.

Components of a Major Location

  • Location Name
  • Description
  • Major Features
  • Plot Hooks

 .

Setting Name

The name should reflect the location it is describing.  Examples include Old Forest, Mirror Lake or City of Lakeshore.

.

Description

This is the real meat of any given location.  You should create several paragraphs describing the location.  What does it look like?  If it’s a city what is the architechure like?  If it’s a forest what kind of trees or animals will the players see?

.

Major Features

Every location should have at least several features.  If it is a city there might be a temple (or temples) to the gods, the local keep where the Baron lives, the local market where all sorts of goods are available and the docks where an array of fishing vessels ply their trade.

Each major feature should have several sentences describing it.  These areas will help you to create your scenes later, so it is is a good idea to give each as much detail as you can.

.

Plot Hooks

Each location should have between one and five plot hooks associated with it.  These will form a pool of events you can draw from if your players end up wandering outside the scenes you’ve created.  For more details on creating plot hooks please refer to the Plot Hooks page.
