Getting Started

The Shattered Gods Roleplaying Game is a tabletop fantasy game where players assume the roles of heroic adventurers.  They band together to explore a fantastic world where sword and sorcery rule the day. They are guided on their adventures by the Game Master (GM for short), who narrarates the story that the characters are a part of.  The GM is responsible for determining what threats the players face, as well as what rewards their characters receive for completing parts of the story.

Each player creates a character, determining their race, class, religion and appearance.  They take on the role of this character, making decisions as he or she feels the character would.  From a noble Dedicated who preaches the word of the Stewards to an awe inspiring Battlemage players can select just about any time of character they can envision.  They develop the character’s personality through game play, gradually gaining experience and accumulating both power and wealth.

The GM controls the world outside the characters, including all the characters that the players meet (often called non-player characters or NPCs).  They are responsible for creating a world that is both exciting and dangerous for the players to explore.  They arbitrate combat, controlling the monsters the player-characters will encounter.

Everything a game master needs to play the game can either be found here or in the Shattered Gods World Book.  The pair provide everything you will need to tell exciting and dynamic stories with your group.

You will also need a set of seven special dice to play .  These dice can be purchased at your local gaming store, or if you have an iPad, iPhone or Andoid you can download the Evil Dice app created specifically for Shattered Gods.

Players will also need a copy of the character sheet found in the back of the Shattered Gods book.  Feel free to make as many copies of the character sheet, or download it from the Shattered Gods website.

Gamemasters should carefully read the Gamemastering Section of the book, which provides a list of the things they will need to run adventures.

While playing the game characters (both player and non-player) will attempt to take actions such as casting spells or attacking an opponent.  These tests are resolved by rolling the dice mentioned above.  Throughout this book you will see dice listed as follows: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20.  The number after the letter d refers to the number of sides on the die.

Characters will often add a modifier to the die roll based on how good they are at that particular task.  If they meet or excede the Difficulty Class, or DC assigned by the GM then they succeed at that action.

As characters adventure they can gain gold, which can be used to buy everything from mounts to better equipment to hiring servants.  They may also gain living enchanted items known as eldimagi.  These items grow in power as they do, and bestow fabulous abilities to their owners.

The characters also gain experience as they adventure.  When they have obtained sufficient experience they gain a level, which grants benefits such as more hit points, higher level spells and greater base attack bonus.

As they grow in strength players will fight greater and greater challenges, eventually writing their names in blood and deeds across the pages of history.

The GM’s Word is Law

Remember that this book is designed to serve as a guide, not a prison.  If the GM wishes to change a rule they may do so, and their word supercedes anything printed in this book.  However, we advise GMs to make changes sparingly.  It is alsways a good idea to discuss such changes with your players to make sure they agree.

The game is first and foremost about having fun, so make sure your players are happy with any changes you wish to make!
