Spells are broken down by Aspect and Greater Path. Each casting class has access to one Realm, one Element and one Greater Path. So for example a Battlemage has Fire, Void and Destruction. Mages can gain access to additional aspects of magic by journeying to Catalysts, which is further explained below.
