House Enestius is one of the oldest in the West, predating The Fall by a generation. It was originally founded as a trade outpost at the base of the only traversable pass in the Khalist mountains, which meant all foot traffic from the Elentian empire needed to pass through it.
The fledgling town sold goods to travellers, while also providing a source of entertainment, food and lodging to the numerous merchant caravans carrying their goods back to the Elentian Empire. This proved to be a very lucrative trade, and the Enestius family grew very wealthy within a few years.
They invested these funds shrewdly, using them to gradually expand their trade empire. A second settlement was built on the Endless Lake, while a third was founded at the edge of the frozen north. The Enestius family built roads connecting these cities, which allowed them to dominate trade over a vast area.
This wealth was vastly increased when Favius Enestius founded the Maker’s Guild. He understood how rare enchanters were, and knew that if he could control the flow of Eldimagi it would make the current Enestius trade empire look like a children’s lemonade stand. He was right.
By the time they joined the Hasran imperium they were by far and away the richest province, a title they still hold some three centuries later. House Enestius has always been full of shrewd businessmen, and that has swelled their coffers for centuries.
No other province in Hasra boasts the sheer number of wealthy nobles Enestius can boast. This makes them arguably the most powerful house, because they have been able to form favorable marriages with well respected families simply because of the dowry they bring to the table.
House Enestius has even intermarried with the Hasran royal line, and no fewer than three of their more prominent members stand within a half dozen deaths of the throne. Even more family members hold prominent positions throughout the imperium.
Three of the twelve Proconsuls scattered throughout Hasra are Enestian, while nearly a third of the magistrates are either members of the house or of minor houses loyal to Enestius. Many joke that the entire bureacracy and most of the judiciary are part of House Enestius.
This isn’t exactly true, as House Enestius is less united than many people realize. Several factions without the house vie for power, and while they will not take an overt action that will harm the house that doesn’t mean they aren’t willing to quietly silence a rival.
