Any type of mage is rare, but enchanters are doubly so. There is only a single life and air catalyst known in the west, so unless a prospective mage survives the maw and is very, very lucky it is nearly impossible to become an enchanter.
Those few who do successfully learn are highly sought after by every kingdom in the west, and for good reason. They control the flow of eldimagi. Everyone from the mightiest king to the lowest street urchin lusts after these incredible objects, so it’s small wonder that those capable of crafting them are in incredibly high demand. Nor did it take long for one among them to capitalize on this demand.
Not long after The Fall a man by the name of Favius Enestius had a brilliant idea. He wanted to unify enchanters everywhere into a mutually beneficial organization. They could share different enchanting materials, knowledge, spells and even completed eldimagi between each other. Their collective bargaining power would also be much, much greater if they presented a united front to the governments of the west.
So Favius formed the Maker’s Guild. He used his family’s enormous wealth to create chapterhouses first in Enestius, and later throughout all of Hasra. He purchased enchanted materials of every type, and spent years recruiting every enchanter he could find.
Within two decades the Maker’s Guild began to resemble the iconic organization it is now well known for. Dozens of enchanters took Favius up on his offer, each earning fabulous fortune’s both for themselves and for the Makers.
The organization was founded on three very important principles. Do no harm to the Makers. Do not share the Maker’s secrets. Help Makers in need. This made it a surprisingly benevolent organization where it’s members were concerned, one that routinely goes to great lengths to help up and coming enchanters find their footing in the world.
Two hundred years later the order is stronger and more well connected than ever. There are chapterhouses in every major city across the west. The Maker’s even have chapterhouses inside of various adventure guilds or palaces. They are everywhere and for good reason. They hold the power no one else does- to harness the power of a god into an eldimagus.
This power is so great that no government will risk offending them. If the Maker’s decided to boycott a given nation that nation would quickly fall prey to it’s rivals. The excepton is the nation of Olivantia, where magic has been completely outlawed. Even though the county’s citizens would love to buy the Maker’s wares, the guild has decided to boycott the nation because it is hostile to mages.
This is just one example of the Maker’s might. Another was the sacking of Enuria, which occurred at their direct insistence. In one fell swoop they annihalated their biggest rivals, and gained access to spells thought lost to the world for millenia.
